Description

Reliably shut down machines in case of critical vibration

METRIX mechanical vibration switches 5550 and 5550G provide basic protection for rotating machinery against excessively high vibrations. If the vibration exceeds the set limit, an inertia-sensitive spring-mass mechanism triggers a snap switch, activating an alarm or shutdown.

Unlike electronic monitoring systems, these switches are intentionally simple, robust, and operate independently of complex signal processing. This is often a decisive advantage, especially for standard machinery or remote installations.

These devices are particularly suitable for applications where detailed condition monitoring is not required, but reliable shutdown in the event of damage is paramount. METRIX explicitly states that mechanical switches are primarily designed to prevent catastrophic damage and are not intended as early warning systems.

The 5550 version offers externally accessible trip point adjustment and local reset, while the 5550G is specifically designed for demanding Ex areas of gas group IIC. Both variants feature robust industrial housings and numerous international approvals.

Another practical advantage is the optional startup bypass. This allows temporary suppression of elevated vibrations during startup to prevent unnecessary shutdowns when the machine is started.
